چکیده
Commercial production of watermelon (Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Matsum & Nakai) is increasing in The Gambia, but tephritid fruit flies present a huge challenge to its production. To avoid severe losses, growers often resort indiscriminate use pesticides manage the pest. Field studies were conducted at two sites (Faraba and Site 3) West Coast Region Gambia evaluate environmentally friendly options (Success Appat (GF-120) Cocoa Butter Cream) for management on crop. Dimethoate insecticide, farmers’ preferred choice, was used as chemical check untreated control plots also maintained. field arranged Randomized Complete Block Design treatments replicated three times. results study showed that, even though species flies, Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel), Dacus vertebratus Bezzi Zeugodacus cucurbitae Coquillett collected both sites, only D. infested fruits. Both Success Cream reduced infestation and, generally, provided comparable protection (Dimethoate) fruits against therefore would be suitable replacements.

Comparison of ploidy level screening methods in watermelon: Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Matsum. and Nakai
Direct (chromosome counting) and indirect (flow cytometry, stomatal size, chloroplast number of the guard cells and morphological observations) methods were tested in order to determine the ploidy levels of haploid and diploid watermelon plants of the cultivars Sugar Baby and Halep Karasi. The results revealed that all the techniques tested can be used successfully. It was determined that while...

The experiments were carried out in two research stations (MARDI Bukit Tangga, Kedah, and MARDI Seberang Perai, Penang) in Malaysia. The crossings were performed using the four inbred lines in complete diallel cross including selfs and reciprocals. We evaluated the yield components and fruit characters such as fruit yield per plant, vine length, days to fruit maturity, fruit weight, total solub...
متن کاملWatermelon (Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Matsum. and Nakai) Juice Modulates Oxidative Damage Induced by Low Dose X-Ray in Mice
Watermelon is a natural product that contains high level of antioxidants and may prevent oxidative damage in tissues due to free radical generation following an exposure to ionizing radiation. The present study aimed to investigate the radioprotective effects of watermelon (Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Matsum. and Nakai) juice against oxidative damage induced by low dose X-ray exposure in mice. T...
متن کاملAutomatic identification of fruit flies (Diptera: Tephritidae)
Fruit flies are pests of major economic importance in agriculture. Among these pests it is possible to highlight some species of genus Anastrepha, which attack a wide range of fruits, and are widely distributed in the American tropics and subtropics. Researchers seek to identify fruit flies in order to implement management and control programs as well as quarantine restrictions. However, fruit ...

A study of the after-ripening of ‘egusi’ melon [Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Matsun and Nakai] fruits was undertaken at the Teaching and Research farm of the University of Agriculture Makurdi in the wet and dry season productions of 2005 and 2007. The aim was to monitor its effects on seed quality. Fruits were harvested at two leaf colour stages [i.e. when leaves started turning yellow (LTY), and...
